Move EN-LANG-01. has risen is the only verb form that fits since 2019; Unless is the only conjunction that opens a condition; applicants is the only plural noun left after the best.

Answers: whose — injured — Despite — recovered — finally — performance — achievement; unused: gave up and determined. The two distractors are chosen to tempt by meaning (the story is about not giving up) — grammar excludes them: no blank needs a verb phrase in the past or a bare adjective.

Move EN-LANG-01. Relative pronoun after a name and before a noun → whose; past participle after badly → injured; preposition opening a noun phrase → Despite.

Move EN-LANG-01. The trap is the pair neither / either: only neither … nor fits the last sentence, so either is the distractor. Blank 1 sits between is and an → adverb; blank 2 before destination → adjective; good … for children → plural noun; … always → adverb almost; … fees → noun entrance.

Idea: six of the eight words form three look-alike pairs — than / then, site / sight, safe / save. They sound (almost) the same but belong to different word classes or have different meanings, so the ear cannot choose: read what comes just before and just after each blank. Do not assume that one word of every pair is the extra item — here both than and then are needed.

• ① safe — after it was not the blank needs an adjective (it was not safe to cross it). save is a verb (save money, save a life) and cannot follow was not in this way.
• ② residents — the verb were needs a plural subject, and only people can be tired of the long detour: the residents are the people who live in the two villages. site and sight are singular.
• ③ then — the adverb of time: first the governorate agreed, then (= after that) work began.
• ④ site — work began on the … needs a noun naming a place: a building site is the area where the work is done. sight is what you see (a beautiful sight, lose sight of something); nobody works on it.
• ⑤ than — the comparison more … two hundred is completed by than. Writing then here is the classic spelling slip.
• ⑥ provides — the subject a small kiosk is singular, so the verb takes -s (provides water and mint tea = supplies them). save is a verb too, but it has no -s and does not mean supply.

What is marked. 0.5 per blank (6 × 0.5 = 3 marks). Each box word is used once; a twin copied with the wrong spelling (then for than, sight for site) is a different word and gets no mark.

Idea: start with the fixed pairs, because their second half is already printed: not … but also, … and …, … to …. Then choose each connector by what follows it — despite + a noun phrase but although + a clause; when for a single moment but while for something that lasts or for a contrast. The two content words come last, from their word class.

• ① only — not only … but also: but also is printed, so the pair is fixed.
• ② Despite — the blank is followed by a noun phrase (the lack of money) and a comma, not by a subject and a verb. Although needs a full clause (Although the club had little money, …), so it is the trap.
• ③ both — both … and joins in summer and in winter. only would also be grammatical here, but it is already needed in ①, and each word is used once.
• ④ from — from six to eight: to is printed, so the time span needs from.
• ⑤ when — winning a title happens at one moment: The club was seven years old when it won. While describes an action in progress or a contrast, so it does not fit a single past event.
• ⑥ medals — after the number fourteen the blank needs a plural noun.
• ⑦ proud — after are and before of us: the adjective in be proud of someone.

What is marked. 0.5 per blank (7 × 0.5 = 3.5 marks). A box word placed in the wrong blank scores nothing, even when its word class fits.
