Idea: three passages, three moves, one habit: before writing anything, name the word class the slot needs. The same decision comes back across the parts — while (conjunction, + clause or -ing) against during (preposition, + noun) in part 1 and again in part 3; adverb against adjective in part 2 (rarely, surprisingly); linking adverb + comma (Yet) in parts 1 and 3. 10 marks: 3.5 + 3 + 3.5.
1. Fill in the blanks — Move EN-LANG-01 (7 × 0.5 = 3.5 marks). Answers: ① who — ② while — ③ build — ④ several — ⑤ Yet — ⑥ will — ⑦ less. Unused: whose, during.
- who — a relative pronoun for a person (their coach) that is the subject of had crossed; whose needs a noun after it (whose son…).
- while — a clause follows (the others rested): conjunction of simultaneity. during is a preposition and needs a noun (during the night).
- build — the base verb after the infinitive marker to: to build their endurance.
- several — a quantifier before a plural noun (several times).
- Yet — linking adverb + comma at the head of the sentence: contrast between the hard crossing and nobody giving up.
- will — modal before the base be used: the money has not been spent yet.
- less — the comparative structure less … than (less for ourselves than for them).
2. Put the bracketed words in the right tense or form — Move EN-LANG-02 (6 × 0.5 = 3 marks). Answers: published — followed — less likely — rarely — have asked — surprisingly.
- (publish) → published — a past participle used as an adjective (a study which was published last month).
- (follow) → followed — between 2015 and 2023 is a finished period: past simple.
- (likely) → less likely — than forces a comparative, and exercise protects the heart, so the walkers were less likely to have a heart attack.
- (rare) → rarely — an adverb modifying the verb moved.
- (ask) → have asked (or have been asking) — Since the results came out → present perfect, plural subject many readers.
- (surprising) → surprisingly — an adverb modifying the adjective simple.
3. Circle the right option — Move EN-LANG-03 (7 × 0.5 = 3.5 marks). Answers: Despite — while — Yet — other — signed — patience — look.
- Despite — a noun phrase follows (the high cost), so a preposition; Although needs a clause, However a comma and a new sentence.
- while — followed by an -ing form here (while keeping up); during needs a noun, unless a condition.
- Yet — the contrast is between all this investment and the few contracts; Therefore would give a result, Besides an addition.
- other — a determiner before a plural noun (other careers); another takes a singular noun, others is a pronoun.
- signed — Last season is finished: past simple.
- patience — a noun after the secret was.
- look — the subject of the relative clause is Clubs, plural: present simple without -s.
