Recommending a holiday experience: tell the stay or the trip, then give reasons a reader can count

Idée directrice

Task 2 sometimes asks you to turn a good holiday memory into a recommendation: a blog post about a hotel where you spent three days with your family, giving at least three reasons to recommend it (scientific paper, 2023 contrôle); a letter to a penfriend about an excursion to a tourist attraction in Tunisia, recommending the same destination (Sport, 2020 contrôle); in the Lettres paper, a letter of thanks describing how an experience has changed your life (2019 contrôle). The frame is rare — these three sessions among the papers read, 2015–2026 — but the task always has two parts: a short, concrete account of the experience in past tenses (where, when, with whom, what you did), then what it is worth to the reader — reasons to go, each tied to something you lived there and counted whenever the instruction prints a number, or, in the letter of thanks, the change it brought. A beautiful account with no reasons, or a list of reasons with no experience behind them, does only half of the task.

Ce qui aide à reconnaître la démarche

« you decided to write a post on your blog to describe your stay and share your experience » ; « State at least three reasons why you would recommend this hotel to your friends » ; « telling him/her about the good experience you had and recommending the same destination » ; « Write her/him a 12-line letter to express your gratitude and describe how … »

Besoin d’un point de départ ? Voir la méthode
  • Circle the verbs and the number: describe your stay + give at least three reasons / recommend = two parts, and the second one is counted.
  • Open with the facts of the experience in two or three lines — when, where, with whom — in the past simple.
  • Give each reason its own ordinal (First… Second… Third…) and one detail you lived there; a reason names a feature of the place (setting, welcome, food, activities, price), never just « it was amazing ».
  • Close with the recommendation proper: who should go, when, and one practical tip (book early, bring warm clothes).
  • Respect the genre and the limit: a title for a blog post; Dear …, a closing line and no name for a letter; never more lines than the instruction prints.
Les pièges à vérifier dans ta démarche
  • Telling the stay day by day and running out of lines before the reasons.
  • Giving two reasons when the instruction prints at least three.
  • Reasons that are not reasons: « it was amazing », « I loved it » — say what was amazing.
  • Mixing tenses: the account is in the past, what the place offers and the advice are in the present.
  • Signing a letter with your own name: the papers print « Do not write your name ».

Writing — Task 2 (8 marks), in the spirit of the 2023 contrôle paper

II. WRITING — Task 2 (8 marks)

During the winter holidays, you spent a long weekend with your family in a small family-run guesthouse in the mountains of Ain Draham, in the north-west of Tunisia. It was a trip you will never forget.

Back home, you want your friends to live the same experience. Write a post for your blog in which you describe your stay and give at least three reasons why you recommend this guesthouse. Do not exceed 12 lines.

1. Read the instruction as a checklist. Idea: the adherence marks reward what the instruction asks and counts, so list its parts before planning: (a) describe the stay — when, where, with whom, what you did; (b) at least three reasons to recommend this guesthouse — features of the place, not a general praise of the region; (c) the genre — a blog post, with a title and readers addressed as friends; (d) the limit — twelve lines at most.

2. Share the twelve lines. Idea: decide before writing how many lines each part gets, so that the account does not eat the reasons.

LinesContent
titlea short title that names the place
1–3the stay: when, where, with whom (past simple)
4–10three reasons, each linked to something you lived there
11–12the recommendation proper and one practical tip for the readers

3. Model post (twelve handwritten lines at most).

Winter magic in Ain Draham

During the winter holidays, my parents, my sister and I spent three days at a small family-run guesthouse in the forests of Ain Draham, and I am still dreaming about it. Here are three reasons why you should book it for your next trip. First, the setting is magical: our room looked out on the cork oaks, and on the second morning we woke up to snow on the hills. Second, the owners made us feel at home. Mrs Ayari cooked delicious traditional dishes with vegetables from her garden, and her husband took us on a long walk to a viewpoint over the valley. Third, the prices are reasonable and breakfast and dinner are included, so it is perfect for a family on a budget. If you love nature and peace, go there in winter or spring, and book early — there are only six rooms!

4. What is credited — criteria printed for task 2 of the scientific paper in the official corrections (2019 principale, 2022 principale):

  • Adherence to task and content adequacy (3 marks). The stay is described (winter holidays, the family, three days, the walk, the snow) and three distinct reasons are counted — the setting, the welcome, the price — each backed by a detail that was lived; the post has a title, speaks to its readers (you should book it) and stays within twelve lines.
  • Lexical appropriacy and grammar accuracy (3 marks). Past simple for the account (spent, woke up, cooked, took), present simple for what the place offers (the prices are reasonable), should and imperatives for the advice (go there, book early); travel words (book, guesthouse, room, trip).
  • Mechanical accuracy (punctuation, capitalization and spelling) (2 marks). Capitals for Ain Draham, Mrs Ayari and the title, a comma after First and Second, the spelling of delicious, reasonable, guesthouse.

5. A copy that tells but does not recommend. Idea: compare with a copy whose English is correct but which spends every line on the account.

During the winter holidays, I went to Ain Draham with my family. We left Tunis early in the morning and arrived at noon. The guesthouse was in the forest. On the first day we walked in the forest and we ate a lot. On the second day it snowed and we played in the snow. On the third day we went back home. It was a very nice trip and the place is beautiful.

The account is clear, in the right past tenses, but the recommendation shrinks to « the place is beautiful »: one vague reason instead of at least three, and nothing that tells the reader why this guesthouse. With no title and no you, it reads as a diary entry, not a blog post, so the adherence marks go even though the grammar is clean.

Variantes rencontrées : a blog post on a hotel where you spent three amazing days with your family, stating at least three reasons why you would recommend it, 12 lines at most (scientific paper, 2023 contrôle); a letter to a penfriend telling him/her about a good experience on an excursion to a tourist attraction in Tunisia and recommending the same destination (Sport, 2020 contrôle — drill HOL-F.1); a 12-line letter of thanks to a teacher whose support helped you quit smoking, describing how your life has changed for the better (Lettres, 2019 contrôle — drill HOL-F.2 carries the gratitude form to a stay abroad). Travel topics also come back in other frames: a 10-line advertisement encouraging tourists to visit Tunisia (Techniques, 2017 contrôle), a 10-line blog post on the importance of travelling inspired by a quote (Techniques, 2020 contrôle) and a preference between a package tour and a self-planned holiday (Sport, 2024 principale).

Drill HOL-F.1 — Sport paper: a letter to a penfriend about an excursion, recommending the place

III. WRITING (8 marks)

Last month, you went on a one-day excursion with your friends to Dougga, the Roman site near Téboursouk, in the north-west of Tunisia. You enjoyed every minute of the trip.

Write a letter of about ten lines to your penfriend in which you tell him/her about this good experience and recommend the place to him/her.

Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: the instruction has two parts — tell the excursion, in past tenses, and recommend the same place to this reader — and a genre, the letter. No number of reasons is printed here, so the recommendation is judged on how concrete and useful it is: why this friend should go, when, and what to take. Share the ten lines: one to open, about five for the day itself, three for the recommendation, one to close.

Model letter (about ten lines).

Dear Laura,

I have visited many places in Tunisia, but last month I discovered my favourite one. My friends and I spent a whole day in Dougga, a Roman town on a hill about two hours from Tunis. First, we climbed to the Capitol, a temple whose tall columns are still standing after almost two thousand years. Then our guide took us to the theatre, and we read a poem on the stage to test the echo — it really works! What I loved most was walking along real Roman streets with no crowds, only olive trees around us. You are crazy about history, so you must visit Dougga when you come to Tunisia. Go in spring, when the hills are green, and bring comfortable trainers and a big bottle of water.

Write back soon!

Your Tunisian friend

What is credited — criteria printed for the Sport writing task in the official correction (2019 principale):

  • Adherence to task and content adequacy (3 marks): both parts — the excursion told through concrete moments (the Capitol, the echo in the theatre, the empty streets) and a recommendation fitted to this reader (she loves history) with practical advice (season, trainers, water); the letter layout: Dear …, a closing line, no name.
  • Lexical appropriacy and grammar accuracy (3 marks): present perfect for I have visited (experience up to now), past simple for the day itself, must and imperatives for the advice; First and Then to order the day.
  • Mechanical accuracy (punctuation, capitalization and spelling) (2 marks): a comma after Dear Laura, capitals for Dougga, Capitol, Tunisia, the spelling of columns and theatre.

The trap. A letter that reads like a brochure (« Dougga has a theatre, a Capitol and temples. It is a beautiful site. Visit it. ») recommends without telling: there is no I, no memory of the day, so the first part is missing. The opposite copy tells the whole day and never says you should come.

Drill HOL-F.2 — Lettres paper (10 marks): a letter of thanks describing how a stay abroad changed you

II. WRITING — Task 2 (10 marks)

During the summer holidays, thanks to an exchange programme, you spent four weeks with a host family, the O'Briens, in Galway, in the west of Ireland. They welcomed you like a son or a daughter, helped you with your English and showed you their country on day trips.

Write them a 12-line letter to thank them for their kindness and to describe how this travel experience has changed you.

Dear Mr and Mrs O'Brien, …… Yours sincerely, — NB: do not write your name.

Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: two parts again, but not a recommendation: thank — for what the family really did, not a general « thank you for everything » — and describe the change, what you can do or see now that you could not before. The stay is told in the past simple; the change is said in the present perfect and the present (has improved, have become, I now speak). Give the change most of the twelve lines — weak copies spend them on the story of the stay.

Model letter (twelve lines).

Dear Mr and Mrs O'Brien,

I am writing to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the four wonderful weeks I spent in your home last summer. You did not treat me as a guest but as a member of your family, and I will never forget it.

This trip has changed me in many ways. First, my English has improved beyond my hopes: thanks to our long dinners and your patience with my mistakes, I now speak without fear, and I even understand the jokes on the radio. Moreover, I have become more independent, because I learned to take the bus alone and to plan a day out by myself. Above all, travelling has opened my mind: I discovered a way of life very different from mine, yet so close to it in its love of family and music.

I hope to welcome you in Tunisia next summer.

Yours sincerely,

What is credited — criteria printed for this 10-mark task in the official Lettres correction (2019 contrôle):

  • Adherence to task and content adequacy (4 marks): gratitude justified by what the family did (a place in the family, patience with mistakes) and three changes, each with an example — English, independence, an open mind; the printed opening and closing kept, no name.
  • Language (lexical appropriacy and grammar accuracy) (4 marks): present perfect for the changes, past simple for the stay, thanks to + noun, because to explain; First, Moreover, Above all to rank them.
  • Mechanics of writing (2 marks): the apostrophe in O'Brien, a comma after the opening and the closing, capitals for English and Tunisia.

The trap. A letter that tells the four weeks day by day and puts « thank you for everything » in its last line has thanked, but it has described no change, and that is the second half of the instruction.
