REA-GReading comprehension: the closed items

Full reading block: six chained items on one bac-length text (12 marks)

Idée directrice

Part I of the paper is one adapted press text of about 1,500 to 2,400 characters (three to five numbered paragraphs, usually a true story of adversity, initiative or a change of life) followed by a fixed chain of six or seven items worth 12 marks. Each item has its own rule — one tick, one word in the printed form, one detail copied from the named paragraph, two separate reasons, a word of the same class, a reason that agrees with the position — and most marks are lost by breaking a rule, not by misreading the story. Working the whole block in about 40 minutes trains what the single-item scenarios cannot: finding the named paragraph fast, switching rules from one item to the next and copying exactly each time. The order below is that of the shared scientific paper, principale 2026; the Sport and Techniques orders are in the drills.

Besoin d’un point de départ ? Voir la méthode
  • Before reading: note the paragraph each item names, and the number of words or details it asks for.
  • Item 1 last in your head, first on the paper: tell the story in one line, then label each option whole / too narrow / contradicted.
  • Gapped passage and synonyms: grammar first (noun, adjective, base verb), then the word exactly as printed in the named paragraph.
  • False statements and reasons: one detail per line, copied from the named paragraph; two reasons are two different facts.
  • Personal answer: complete the frame, one position, one reason on the same side. Keep about five minutes to reread the copied words.
Les pièges à vérifier dans ta démarche
  • Taking a word from the wrong paragraph because it also fits the blank (delivers in paragraph 4).
  • Changing the form of a copied word (deliver → delivering): the key accepts the printed form.
  • Giving the situation or the decision itself as one of the « two reasons ».
  • Explaining a false statement in your own words instead of copying a detail.
  • Spending twenty minutes on items 1–3 and rushing the last three, which are worth half the marks.
Sujet principal

I. Reading comprehension — the complete block (12 marks, about 40 minutes)

1 questionCorrigé masqué

I. READING COMPREHENSION. Read the text below carefully, then answer the questions that follow it.

1. When the textile factory in Ben Arous where she had sewn jeans for twenty-seven years closed in 2019, Najet Mansouri was fifty-two. She spent the next four months looking for work, but every workshop she visited wanted younger women, and most of them said so openly. One manager told her that at her age she should be thinking about her grandchildren, not about a job. At the same time, her husband's heart condition had become so serious that he could no longer drive his taxi, and someone had to stay close to home to look after him. "I could not work far away, and nobody would hire me nearby," she says. "So I decided to hire myself."

2. She started with what she knew best: her mother's recipes. Every morning at five, she cooked couscous, lablabi and stuffed peppers in her own kitchen, packed them in plastic boxes and sold them to the workers of a building site at the end of her street. She wrote the day's menu on a piece of cardboard and hung it on the fence of the site. The meals were cheap, the portions were generous and the food was still warm at noon. Within a few weeks, the workers were bringing friends from other sites, and her son had to deliver the boxes in his old car. By the end of the first year, she was preparing ninety meals a day.

3. The beginnings were far from easy. In the second month, a customer disappeared without paying for three weeks of meals, and Najet lost almost all her savings. She burned her right hand on a pot of boiling oil and went on cooking with her left. Her daughter, a pharmacist in Tunis, begged her to stop. "She thought I was too old for such a hard job," Najet remembers. "I told her that sewing jeans ten hours a day had not been easy either." In 2021, she rented a small professional kitchen two streets away.

4. Today, the kitchen employs eleven women and delivers about three hundred meals a day to building sites, offices and a clinic. Najet only hires women over forty who have been widowed, divorced or left without work, "because nobody else will give them a chance, as nobody gave me one". Each of them earns the same salary, whatever her job, and every Friday the women eat lunch together before going home. Her husband, whose health has improved, now answers the phone and takes the orders. Her next project is modest: "I want a second kitchen, and a bigger pot."

I- COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS (12 marks)

1. Tick (✓) the most appropriate option. (1 mark)

The text is mainly about a woman who

a. lost her job when a textile factory closed. ☐

b. turned a personal setback into a business that gives others a chance. ☐

c. gave up cooking to look after her sick husband. ☐

2. Complete the gapped passage below with three words from paragraph 2. One blank, ONE word. (3 marks)

Najet's business began modestly in her own ① ____________. Her meals soon became popular: they cost little, and the portions were so ② ____________ that nobody left hungry. Her son helped her ③ ____________ them to other building sites.

3. For each of the following statements, pick out ONE detail from the text showing that it is FALSE. (3 marks)

a. Najet's first customers were office workers from the centre of town. (paragraph 2)

b. Najet's family encouraged her from the start. (paragraph 3)

c. The women Najet employs are paid according to their position. (paragraph 4)

4. Focus on paragraph 1 and pick out the two reasons that made Najet decide to start her own business. (2 marks)

a. ______________________________________

b. ______________________________________

5. Pick out words / expressions meaning nearly the same as: (2 marks)

a. asked strongly and anxiously (paragraph 3): ____________

b. not large or ambitious (paragraph 4): ____________

6. Give a personal justified answer to the following question. (1 mark)

Do you think that starting a business after fifty is a good idea? Why? Why not?

I think that starting a business after fifty ____________ a good idea because ____________.

Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: read the six questions first and write in the margin the paragraph each one names (item 2 → paragraph 2, item 3 → paragraphs 2, 3, 4, item 4 → paragraph 1, item 5 → paragraphs 3 and 4). Then read the text once for the story line, and answer in order, going back to the named paragraph for each item. The story in one line: a factory worker who loses her job at fifty-two starts cooking at home, survives a hard beginning and now employs women whom nobody else would hire.

1 Idea: the gist covers the whole story. a. is paragraph 1 only: true, but too narrow. c. is contradicted: she never gave up cooking, and her husband now takes the orders. b. covers the setback (paragraph 1), the business (paragraphs 2–3) and the chance she gives other women (paragraph 4).

Answer: b.

2 Idea: one blank, one word, copied from paragraph 2 in the form printed there. Read the grammar of each blank first, then find the word.

① after her own comes a noun, a place: kitchen (« in her own kitchen »).

② so … that nobody left hungry needs an adjective about quantity: generous (« the portions were generous »). Warm is in the same sentence of the text, but warmth does not stop anyone being hungry; cheap is already given by they cost little.

③ after helped her comes a base verb: deliver (« her son had to deliver the boxes »). Delivers is also in the text, in paragraph 4, but it is the wrong paragraph and the wrong form.

3 Idea: for each statement, copy ONE detail from the paragraph given in brackets that makes it impossible. Copy; do not explain, and do not write False alone.

a. « sold them to the workers of a building site at the end of her street »

b. « Her daughter, a pharmacist in Tunis, begged her to stop. »

c. « Each of them earns the same salary, whatever her job. »

4 Idea: two reasons = two separate facts from paragraph 1, each of which pushed her towards working for herself.

a. Every workshop she visited wanted younger women (nobody would hire a woman of fifty-two).

b. Her husband's heart condition: he could no longer drive his taxi, and she had to stay close to home to look after him.

The closing of the factory is the situation, not a reason for this choice: on its own, it would only have sent her to look for another job — which is what she did first.

5 Idea: the answer has the same word class and form as the definition: a past verb for asked, an adjective for not large.

a. asked strongly and anxiously = begged

b. not large or ambitious = modest

6 Idea: the official keys accept any plausible answer as long as the reason does not contradict the position. Fill in the frame with one clear choice, then give one reason for that choice.

Accepted: « I think that starting a business after fifty is a good idea because you already have experience and skills, as Najet had her mother's recipes and years of hard work behind her. »

Accepted too: « I think that starting a business after fifty is not a good idea because a failure can take all your savings when there is little time left to rebuild them, as Najet nearly lost everything in her second month. »

0 mark: « … is not a good idea because Najet now employs eleven women. » The reason argues for the other side.

Variantes rencontrées : the shared scientific paper keeps the chain gist → one-word summary → false statements → retrieval (two reasons, a table) → vocabulary → personal answer (principale 2026: 1 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 2 + 1); in principale 2025 a four-cell table (« Complete with information from paragraphs 1 & 2 », 4 marks) and an expression MCQ replace the summary. Sport (principale 2026): gist, false statements, « Fill in each blank with ONE word from paragraphs 2 and 3 », « Tick (√) the right option » for a word and an expression, reference words, a conditional personal answer. Techniques (contrôle 2026): « the statement that best conveys the message of the text », false statements, a question answered by a small calculation, two adjectives, vocabulary, reference words, personal answer.

1 questionCorrigé masqué

I. READING COMPREHENSION (12 marks). Read the text, then answer the questions. The underlined words are printed in bold.

1. Until the age of twenty, Aymen Toumi had never worn running shoes. He grew up in a village near Aïn Draham and spent his days walking behind his father's sheep on the steep hills of Kroumirie. In 2019, a cousin signed him up, almost as a joke, for a 30-kilometre mountain race. His father thought that running was a waste of time for a young man who had work to do. Aymen ran it in borrowed shoes and finished second, only four minutes behind a professional runner.

2. A coach from Tabarka noticed him and offered to train him for free. The beginning was hard: Aymen had strong legs but no technique, and he often started races far too fast. His coach taught him to control his breathing, to eat properly and to save his energy for the last climb. "He had the heart of a champion," the coach says. "He only needed patience."

3. In 2023, Aymen won the national trail championship, and last year he finished sixth in an international race in the Alps, among runners from thirty-one countries. At the finish, he was so surprised that he asked twice whether the result was correct. Sponsors now pay for his equipment and his flights, but this new comfort has not changed his habits: he still trains on the paths where he once walked with the sheep.

4. Aymen has also started a small running club for the teenagers of his village, who meet every Saturday morning in front of the mosque. Twelve boys and five girls came to the first session; now there are forty. "Up here, young people think that success is always somewhere else," he says. "I want to show them that it can start on the hill behind their house."

Practice text written in the style of the adapted press articles of the bac papers.

1. Tick (√) the most suitable option. (1 mark)

The text is mainly about a young man who

a. became a champion thanks to talent, help and hard work. ☐

b. left his village to become a professional coach. ☐

c. won his first race thanks to a professional runner. ☐

2. For each of the following statements, pick out ONE detail from the text showing that it is false. (3 marks)

a. Aymen had prepared for his first race for a long time. (paragraph 1)

b. Aymen had to pay his first coach. (paragraph 2)

c. Success has taken Aymen away from the paths of his childhood. (paragraph 3)

3. Fill in each blank with ONE word from paragraphs 2 and 3. (3 marks)

At first, Aymen lacked ____________: he had strong legs but often started races too fast. His coach showed him how to control his ____________ and keep his energy for the end. Today, ____________ cover the cost of his equipment.

4. Tick (√) the right option. (2 marks)

A. noticed (paragraph 2) nearly means

a. criticised ☐

b. spotted ☐

c. forgot ☐

B. the heart of a champion (paragraph 2) nearly means

a. a strong and healthy heart ☐

b. the courage and will to win ☐

c. a past full of medals ☐

5. What do the underlined words in the text refer to? (2 marks)

a. this new comfort (paragraph 3) refers to ____________.

b. who (paragraph 4) refers to ____________.

6. Give a personal justified answer to the following question. (1 mark)

If you were Aymen, would you stay in your village after becoming famous? Why? Why not?

If I were Aymen, I ____________ stay in my village because ____________.

Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: the Sport chain has no retrieval grid; it tests exact copying three times (items 2, 3, 5) and inference twice (items 1, 4). Note the paragraphs first: items 2 and 3 cover paragraphs 1 to 3, item 5 paragraphs 3 and 4.

1 One-line story: a shepherd with no training is spotted, coached, becomes a champion and now coaches the young. b. is contradicted (he coaches a club in his own village and still trains there); c. is contradicted (he finished behind the professional runner). Answer: a.

2 One detail each, copied from the paragraph given.

a. « Until the age of twenty, Aymen Toumi had never worn running shoes » (or « a cousin signed him up, almost as a joke », or « Aymen ran it in borrowed shoes »)

b. « offered to train him for free »

c. « he still trains on the paths where he once walked with the sheep »

3 Idea: the grammar of each blank points to the word class. lacked + noun → technique (paragraph 2). control his + noun → breathing (paragraph 2). A plural subject for cover → Sponsors (paragraph 3). Energy is also in paragraph 2, but the sentence already contains it after the blank.

4 Idea: on an athlete text, the expression often sounds physical; decide what it means in its sentence.

A. A coach noticed him and offered to train him: he saw his talent. Answer: b. spotted.

B. The coach adds « He only needed patience »: the heart here is courage, not the organ (a. is the literal trap), and he has no medals yet at that point (c.). Answer: b.

5 Idea: a noun phrase can refer back too. Look for what, just before, is a new comfort, and what a relative pronoun follows.

a. this new comfort → sponsors paying for his equipment and his flights.

b. who → the teenagers of his village.

6 One position, one reason on the same side. Accepted: « If I were Aymen, I would stay in my village because I could keep training on the hills that made me strong and help the young people there. » Also accepted: « … I would not stay … because I would need a professional club and better medical care to progress. » 0 mark: « I would stay because the Alps are beautiful. » The reason does not support staying in the village.

Drill REA-G.2 — the Techniques order: message MCQ, a two-cell table, a small calculation, reference words

1 questionCorrigé masqué

I. READING COMPREHENSION (12 marks). Read the text, then answer the questions. The underlined words are printed in bold.

1. Last March, Walid Hamdi, a delivery driver in Sfax, found a brown leather wallet on the back seat of a shared taxi. He had been driving since six in the morning and still had eleven parcels to deliver. Inside, there were forty 50-dinar notes, a bank card and an identity card belonging to a certain Kamel Jaziri. Walid had saved 1,350 dinars for his daughter's operation, which was planned for the following month and would cost 3,100 dinars.

2. "For about ten minutes, I did not move," he admits. "I thought about my daughter the whole time." Then he did two things. First, he drove to the address written on the identity card, but nobody answered. Then, instead of keeping the money, he went to the nearest police station and handed in the wallet, asking the officer to count the notes in front of him so that nobody could doubt his honesty.

3. Mr Jaziri, a seventy-four-year-old retired engineer, had taken the money out of the bank that morning to pay for his wife's glasses. He had been looking for the wallet all afternoon and had already cancelled his bank card. When the police called him, he could hardly believe it. He asked for Walid's phone number and invited him and his family to lunch. When he learned about the little girl's operation, he insisted on paying what was still missing himself.

4. Walid refused at first, then accepted on one condition: that Mr Jaziri come to the hospital on the day of the operation. The old man kept his promise, and he still visits the family every Friday. The operation went well, and two months later the little girl was walking without pain. "I lost a wallet and found a second family," he says. Walid's colleagues, who laughed at him in March, now call him "the honest driver".

Practice text written in the style of the adapted press articles of the bac papers.

1. Tick (√) the statement that best conveys the message of the text. (1 mark)

a. Honesty can bring more than it costs. ☐

b. Money is the answer to every family problem. ☐

c. Never trust strangers with your belongings. ☐

2. For each of the following statements, pick out ONE detail from the text showing that it is false. (3 marks)

a. Walid kept the wallet for several days before deciding what to do. (paragraph 2)

b. Mr Jaziri had lost money he did not need. (paragraph 3)

c. Walid's colleagues have always admired his behaviour. (paragraph 4)

3. Focus on paragraph 2 and complete the table with the two things Walid did. (2 marks)

FirstThen
a. ……………b. ……………

4. Answer the following question with reference to paragraphs 1 and 3. (1 mark)

How much money did Mr Jaziri pay for the operation?

5. Find words or expressions in the text meaning nearly the same as: (2 marks)

a. gave to someone in authority (paragraph 2): ____________

b. demanded firmly (paragraph 3): ____________

6. What do the underlined words in the text refer to? (2 marks)

a. which (paragraph 1) refers to: ____________.

b. The old man (paragraph 4) refers to: ____________.

7. Give a personal justified answer to the following question. (1 mark)

Do you think Walid should have kept the money for his daughter's operation? Why? Why not?

I think Walid ____________ because ____________.

Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: the Techniques chain is short on copying and long on small inferences: a message instead of a gist, a table of actions, and one number that the text never prints. Work out the number on the paper; the key gives the mark for the right figure.

1 A message is a general lesson, not a summary. b. is contradicted: the problem is solved by honesty and kindness, not by money alone; c. is contradicted: the stranger who found the wallet is the one who gave it back. Answer: a.

2 a. « For about ten minutes, I did not move » — minutes, not days.

b. « had taken the money out of the bank that morning to pay for his wife's glasses »

c. « Walid's colleagues, who laughed at him in March »

3 Idea: the paragraph announces « he did two things » and marks them with First and Then.

a. He drove to the address written on the identity card.

b. He handed in the wallet at the nearest police station (and asked the officer to count the notes in front of him).

4 Idea: paragraph 3 says Mr Jaziri paid « what was still missing »; paragraph 1 gives the cost and Walid's savings. 3,100 − 1,350 = 1,750. Answer: Mr Jaziri paid 1,750 dinars. The 2,000 dinars in the wallet (40 × 50) is the number the question does not ask for.

5 a. gave to someone in authority = handed in (« handed in the wallet »: a phrasal verb, so copy both words).

b. demanded firmly = insisted.

6 a. which → his daughter's operation.

b. The old man → Mr (Kamel) Jaziri.

7 Any position, if the reason supports it. Accepted: « I think Walid was right not to keep the money because it belonged to someone else, and he could not have been proud of an operation paid with stolen money. » Also accepted: « I think Walid was wrong to hand in all the money without asking the owner for any help, because his daughter's operation could not wait. » 0 mark: a position with no reason, or « I think he was right to give it back because 2,000 dinars is a lot of money ».

Drill REA-G.3 — the shared-paper order of 2025: a four-cell table and an expression MCQ

1 questionCorrigé masqué

I. READING COMPREHENSION (12 marks). Read the text, then answer the questions. The underlined words and expressions are printed in bold.

1. For forty years, the Ben Salem pastry shop on the square of Bab Souika was famous for its baklawa, and customers queued in the street every Ramadan evening. In 2023, the founder's grandson, Mehdi, 29, decided to sell the pastries in supermarkets too. To keep up with the orders, the shop bought cheaper almonds from a new supplier and began adding preservatives to its recipes. Mehdi also designed new boxes with a modern logo. Within months, sales had doubled.

2. The success did not last. In January 2024, a customer posted a video showing a box of the supermarket pastries whose expiry date had been changed by hand. The video was watched more than two million times in a week, and one of the shop's oldest customers brought back a box he had bought for Eid. Two supermarket chains cancelled their contracts, the regular customers, who had defended the shop for decades, stayed away, and inspectors fined the company 20,000 dinars. "In one week, forty years of reputation disappeared," Mehdi says. "We were back to square one."

3. Mehdi did not hide. He posted a video apology, took back every box still on sale and destroyed eleven tonnes of pastries. He went back to his grandfather's recipes, with no preservatives, and to the almond growers of Sfax that the shop had always used. He also opened the kitchen to the public: every Saturday, customers can watch the pastries being made. "The scandal was a blessing in disguise," he says today. "It reminded us why people loved us." It took eight months before the first supermarket customers came back to the shop itself.

4. Sales are still lower than in 2023, but the queues are back on Ramadan evenings. Mehdi has refused two offers from supermarket chains. His grandfather, now eighty-three, comes every morning to taste the first tray. "Growing fast almost destroyed us," he says. "Now we grow slowly, and the baklawa tastes better."

Practice text written in the style of the adapted press articles of the bac papers.

1. Tick (✓) the right alternative. (1 mark)

The text is mainly about a family business that

a. lost its customers for ever after a scandal. ☐

b. learned from a scandal and went back to its values. ☐

c. doubled its sales thanks to supermarkets. ☐

2. Complete with information from paragraphs 2 & 3. (4 marks)

Consequences of the video (paragraph 2)Measures taken by Mehdi (paragraph 3)
a. ……………c. ……………
b. ……………d. ……………

3. For each of the following statements, pick out ONE detail from the text showing that it is FALSE. (3 marks)

a. The shop has always sold its pastries only on the square of Bab Souika. (paragraph 1)

b. Mehdi tried to keep the scandal quiet. (paragraph 3)

c. Mehdi now wants to sell his pastries in as many shops as possible. (paragraph 4)

4. Tick (✓) the correct option. (2 marks)

A. “back to square one” (paragraph 2) nearly means: we were

a. back where we had started ☐

b. back on our old square ☐

c. back in first position ☐

B. “a blessing in disguise” (paragraph 3) nearly means: something that looked bad but

Idea: here the retrieval item is worth 4 marks — a third of the block. Each cell takes one distinct fact from the paragraph named at the top of its column; two cells with the same fact score once.

1 a. is contradicted (« the queues are back on Ramadan evenings »); c. is paragraph 1 only, before the scandal: too narrow. b. covers the fall, the measures and the return to the old recipes. Answer: b.

2 Idea: consequences are what happened to the shop in paragraph 2; measures are what Mehdi did in paragraph 3. Any two distinct facts per column are accepted.

a. Two supermarket chains cancelled their contracts.

b. The regular customers stayed away / inspectors fined the company 20,000 dinars.

c. He posted a video apology / took back every box still on sale and destroyed eleven tonnes of pastries.

d. He went back to his grandfather's recipes and to the almond growers of Sfax / he opened the kitchen to the public on Saturdays.

3 a. « decided to sell the pastries in supermarkets too »

b. « Mehdi did not hide. » (or « He posted a video apology »)

c. « Mehdi has refused two offers from supermarket chains. »

4 Idea: polarity and domain first, then cross out the literal option.

A. The sentence before: « forty years of reputation disappeared ». Polarity negative, domain: the shop's situation. b. is the literal trap set by the square of Bab Souika in paragraph 1; c. has the wrong polarity. Answer: a.

B. The sentence after: « It reminded us why people loved us. » Something bad that did good. a. has the wrong polarity; c. reads disguise literally. Answer: b.

5 who → the regular customers (of the shop).

6 Accepted: « I think that a company can win back its customers' trust after a scandal because honest measures show that it has changed, as the queues came back when Mehdi returned to the old recipes. » Also accepted: « I don't think … because customers remember a lie longer than an apology, and sales are still lower than before. » What counts is one position and a reason on the same side.
