Guided writing: an invention or a device from notes

Idée directrice

When Task 1 of the Writing section is about technology, the table describes an object: a household robot, a student satellite, a device with its designer, its features and its purpose. The paragraph is a technical presentation in the present tense — what it is, who made it, what it is made of, what it is for — with every figure of the notes and none of the writer's imagination.

Signature de reconnaissance — l'énoncé se trahit ainsi

« Use the notes in the table to write a 5-line paragraph about “The Assistant Robot” » ; « Use the notes below to write a four-line paragraph about Challenge-1, the first Tunisian satellite »

Sujet principal

Writing — Task 1 (guided writing, 4 to 5 marks)

1 questionCorrigé masqué

II - Writing (Task 1, 5 marks). Use the notes in the table to write a 5-line paragraph about SolarMate, a portable water purifier. It is a low-cost technology for villages without running water.

Typeportable water purifier / solar-powered

Features2 kg / foldable solar panel / 10 litres per hour / ceramic filter / digital indicator of filter wear
Purposeprovide clean drinking water / villages / after floods

Use all the prompts in a logical order and add no fact that is not in the table. Marks: use of the prompts (2), language (2), mechanics (1).

Model paragraph

SolarMate is a portable, solar-powered water purifier designed in 2023 by young Tunisian engineers of a technology start-up. It weighs only 2 kg and works with a foldable solar panel and a ceramic filter that can clean 10 litres of water per hour; a digital indicator shows when the filter is worn. Its purpose is to provide clean drinking water to villages, especially after floods, when wells are polluted. At 60 dinars, it is ten times cheaper than imported models, which makes it accessible to the communities that need it most.

Move 1 — Appropriate use of the prompts (EN-WRIT-01). Type, designers, features, purpose and cost appear in that order and every figure of the table is reused (2 kg, 10 litres per hour, 60 dinars, ten times). The remark on polluted wells only explains the row after floods; it adds no new fact.

Move 2 — Language, grammar and vocabulary (EN-WRIT-03). The present simple describes the device (weighs, works, can clean); a relative clause links the filter to its capacity; especially and which makes it turn two rows into one sentence.

Move 3 — Mechanics of writing (EN-WRIT-04). Capital letters on the product name, hyphens in solar-powered, units written after the figures, no slash left in the paragraph.

Model paragraph

Aurora-2 is a Tunisian mini-satellite that was launched from India on 12 May 2024. It was built in a robotics laboratory by 30 young engineers after two years of work. The satellite carries a digital camera, temperature sensors and a radio transmitter. Its mission is to observe coastal erosion and to send its data free of charge to coastal towns.

Move 1 — Appropriate use of the prompts (EN-WRIT-01). Four rows, four sentences, in the order launch → makers → equipment → mission; every number is reused.

Move 2 — Language, grammar and vocabulary (EN-WRIT-03). Past passive for the launch and the building (was launched, was built), present for what the object carries and is.

Move 3 — Mechanics of writing (EN-WRIT-04). Capital letters on India and the satellite name, commas in the list of equipment, no slash.

II - Writing (Task 1, 5 marks). Use the notes in the table to write a 5-line paragraph about Helpo, a household robot.

Model paragraph

Helpo is a household robot designed in 2022 by the Robotics Research Centre in Sfax to assist elderly people in their daily tasks. It is 1.20 m tall and weighs 35 kg; it moves on four wheels, has two arms and obeys voice control. Helpo can carry objects, remind its owner of medicine times and call the family in case of a fall. It costs 4,000 dinars, but it can also be rented.

Move 1 — Appropriate use of the prompts (EN-WRIT-01). All five rows in order, purpose given with to assist, price and rental in the last sentence; nothing added about the future of robots.

Move 2 — Language, grammar and vocabulary (EN-WRIT-03). Present simple for description, can for abilities, the semicolon and but to join short rows.

Move 3 — Mechanics of writing (EN-WRIT-04). Units and figures as in the notes (1.20 m, 35 kg, 4,000 dinars), capital letters on the centre and the city.

Méthode / Automatismes
  • Identify the object in one sentence first: X is a … designed by … in ….
  • Group the features in one sentence with and; give the purpose with is used to / its purpose is to.
  • Keep the present simple: a device is described, not narrated.
  • Reuse every number with its unit; a missing figure is a missing prompt.
  • Do not evaluate the invention — the task is a presentation, not an opinion.
Pièges classiques

The frequent loss is a list of features copied with slashes, or a paragraph that praises the invention (This amazing robot will change our lives) with content that is not in the notes. The second is the wrong tense: a satellite launched in 2021 was launched, but its equipment includes.
