Guided writing: a short report on a chart about digital life

A rarer form of Task 1 replaces the notes with figures: a graph of virtual-school enrolments, a pie chart of the effects of cyberbullying. The four or five lines must read the chart — what is measured, the biggest and smallest values, the trend — and then say what the figures mean, using the reasons the brief asks for. Numbers are quoted, not rounded away.

II - Writing (Task 1, 4 marks). The table below gives the results of a 2024 survey on the daily time spent on digital devices (phone, tablet, computer) by 1,000 Tunisian teenagers. Use the data to write a four-line report in which you comment on the figures and mention two effects of long screen time on young people.

Model paragraph

According to a 2024 survey of 1,000 Tunisian teenagers, only 15 % spend less than two hours a day in front of a screen, while half of them (30 % plus 20 %) spend more than four hours, and one in five exceeds six hours. The largest group, 35 %, is between two and four hours. These long hours have clear effects: almost half of the teenagers (48 %) report poor sleep and 41 % find it hard to concentrate in class. The figures suggest that screen time is not an occasional habit but a daily routine for most young people.

Move 1 — Appropriate use of the prompts (EN-WRIT-01). The report names the survey, quotes the extreme values, the largest group and the sum for more than four hours, then gives exactly the two effects asked for with their percentages. No cause is invented.

Move 2 — Language, grammar and vocabulary (EN-WRIT-03). Quantifiers and comparison words carry the reading (only, while, half of them, one in five, the largest group); the conclusion uses a hedged verb (suggest), which is the register of a report.

Move 3 — Mechanics of writing (EN-WRIT-04). Percent signs written as in the table, figures in digits, a colon before the effects, one paragraph without bullet points.

Model paragraph

Between 2016 and 2024, the share of households with an internet connection rose from 32 % to 82 %, more than doubling in eight years. The increase was moderate until 2018 (45 %), then very sharp in 2020, when the figure jumped to 71 %; after that the growth slowed down, with 76 % in 2022 and 82 % in 2024. Families give two main reasons for connecting: their children's online lessons and homework, and the digital public services, such as bills and appointments, which are now handled on the internet.

Move 1 — Appropriate use of the prompts (EN-WRIT-01). Start and end values, the doubling, the jump of 2020 and the slowdown are read from the table, and exactly the two reasons of the brief close the report.

Move 2 — Language, grammar and vocabulary (EN-WRIT-03). Verbs of variation (rose, jumped, slowed down), time linkers (until, then, after that), the participle more than doubling to avoid a new sentence.

Model paragraph

According to a 2023 survey of 2,000 secondary-school students who had been bullied online, anxiety is the most frequent consequence, reported by 37 % of them, followed by a loss of self-confidence (28 %). One student in five (20 %) started avoiding friends and school events, and 15 % saw their school results fall. Together, these figures show that cyberbullying damages both the mental health and the social life of its victims.

Move 1 — Appropriate use of the prompts (EN-WRIT-01). The four shares are quoted in descending order, the population is named, and the closing sentence returns to the exact wording of the task (mental health, social life).

Move 2 — Language, grammar and vocabulary (EN-WRIT-03). Ranking words (the most frequent, followed by), a fraction for 20 % (one in five), a synthetic Together, these figures show.

Méthode / Automatismes

Start with the source and the population: According to a … survey of ….
Quote the highest and the lowest value, then the trend or the dominant group.
Add the figures only when the brief allows it (half, one in five) — never round a percentage away.
Comment in one or two sentences with the reasons or effects the task asks for, nothing else.
Keep the report tone: the figures show / suggest, no I think.

Pièges classiques

The commonest loss is writing an opinion essay about screens and forgetting the numbers, or the reverse: a list of percentages with no sentence. The second is misreading the chart — adding shares that overlap, or calling 35 % a majority.
