Retrieval grids: fact table, « pick out two … », cause–effect chart, dates, phases and flow charts

Idée directrice

The 2-to-4-mark retrieval slot keeps changing its surface — a fact table, « list / pick out two … », a cause–effect chart, dates to match, phases to reorder, a flow chart — but the key always pays for the same thing: one minimal fact per cell or line, taken from the paragraph named, in the shape the heading asks for. When the text gives relative information (at 22 … fourteen years later, the following year), the cell needs a small calculation. When two items are asked, they must be two different ideas. The fact grid is fading (23 papers from 2015 to 2026), while cause–effect charts (10, all since 2020) and chronology or flow charts (9, mostly Lettres) are rising.

Ce qui aide à reconnaître la démarche

« Complete the table with information about … (focus on paragraph 1) » ; « Focus on paragraph 3 and pick out the two reasons … » ; « Complete this cause-effect chart with reference to paragraphs 1, 2 and 4 » ; « Match the dates in Column A with the corresponding events in Column B » ; « Reorder the phases of … » ; « Complete the flow chart below with information from paragraphs 1 and 3 »

Besoin d’un point de départ ? Voir la méthode
  • Read the headings or the given cells first: they are the questions. A given cell also shows the length expected.
  • Go to the paragraph(s) named; one short fact per cell, in the form of the heading (Tunisian, 36, a clause for a cause or an effect).
  • Turn relative information into the value asked: at 22 in 2011 + fourteen years later → 36 in 2025; the following year → the year after the date given.
  • Cause–effect: find the connector (because, so, as a result, led to) and check the direction — given cause → find the effect, given effect → find the cause.
  • « Pick out two … » or « list three … »: distinct items, never one idea written twice; for dates and phases, rebuild the order of events, not the order of the paragraphs.
Les pièges à vérifier dans ta démarche
  • Copying the number printed in the text when the heading asks for another year (22 instead of 36).
  • Filling a nationality cell with a town or a country name.
  • Giving the solution or the reaction instead of the reason asked.
  • Reversing a cause–effect chart: writing the effect in the cause column.
  • Matching an extra event or purpose that belongs to no line: one of them is always left over.

1 questionCorrigé masqué

I. READING COMPREHENSION. Read the text below carefully, then answer the questions that follow it.

1. In 2011, at the age of 22, Nadia Ferchichi became the first woman to join the volunteer sea-rescue crew of Tabarka, the Tunisian port where she was born. Fourteen years later, she commands the crew's fastest lifeboat and has taken part in more than three hundred rescues at sea.

2. Nadia grew up among fishing boats. When she was eleven, her father, a fisherman, lost two friends in a winter storm, and she never forgot the silence in the harbour that night. Because the nearest coastguard station was forty kilometres away, the fishermen decided to form their own rescue team. As a result, when Nadia asked to join, she was knocking on a door she had known all her life.

3. The older crew members hesitated to accept her, for two reasons. The boathouse had no separate changing room, and several of them believed that a woman could not pull a grown man out of rough water. Nadia answered the second objection in her first winter, when she dragged an injured diver onto the deck on her own. For the first, she changed in the harbour master's office for two years.

4. Her example has transformed the crew. Since 2019, seven more women have joined, so the association has built a second changing room with money collected by local families. Last year, the regional authorities gave the crew a new lifeboat because its response times had become the shortest on the northern coast. Nadia now trains young volunteers every Saturday. "The sea does not ask whether you are a man or a woman," she says. "It asks whether you are ready."

Idea: a grid is not a writing task. Each cell earns its mark with one short fact from the paragraph named, in the form its heading asks for (a nationality is an adjective, an age is a number). Copying the whole sentence is not needed; changing the fact is fatal. 1 mark per cell or line.

1.a Idea: the text never writes Nationality:, but it says where she was born. "the Tunisian port where she was born" → Tunisian. Tabarka is wrong: it is a town, not a nationality.

1.b Idea: the heading asks for her age in 2025, and the text gives her age in 2011 plus a gap of time. "In 2011, at the age of 22" and "Fourteen years later" (2011 + 14 = 2025), so 22 + 14 = 36. Writing 22 loses the mark: that is her age in 2011.

1.c Answer: the first woman to join the volunteer sea-rescue crew of Tabarka. Another single fact of paragraph 1 also answers the heading: she commands the crew's fastest lifeboat or more than three hundred rescues. One fact is enough; do not copy the whole paragraph into the cell.

2 Idea: the paragraph announces "for two reasons" and gives them in the next sentence, joined by and. Give one reason per line, and make sure they are two different ideas.

a. The boathouse had no separate changing room.

b. Several of them believed that a woman could not pull a grown man out of rough water.

Wrong for b: "she dragged an injured diver onto the deck on her own". That is Nadia's answer to the objection, not a reason for hesitating. Also wrong: a woman is not strong enough on one line and she could not pull a man out of the water on the other — one reason written twice earns one mark.

3 Idea: read the given cells first to know the direction. In row a the cause is given, so look for its effect after Because …,. In row b the effect is given, so look for its cause before so. The last row, filled in, shows the length expected: one clause.

a. The fishermen decided to form their own rescue team. (paragraph 2: "Because the nearest coastguard station was forty kilometres away, the fishermen decided to form their own rescue team")

b. Seven more women have joined the crew (since 2019). (paragraph 4: "Since 2019, seven more women have joined, so the association has built a second changing room")

Wrong for a: "she was knocking on a door she had known all her life" — it comes after As a result, but it is a consequence of the team existing, not of the distance. Wrong for b: "money collected by local families" — that is how the room was paid for, not why it was built.

1. Sabra Oueslati was born in 1979 in Sejnane, in the hills of north-western Tunisia, where women have shaped clay pots by hand for centuries. She made her first pot at the age of nine, sitting beside her grandmother.

2. At twenty, she married and moved to Tunis, where she worked in a clothing factory for eleven years. When the factory closed, she went back to Sejnane and to the clay. Two years after her return, she sold her first figurines at a crafts fair in Tunis.

3. In 2018, the pottery of the Sejnane women was added to an international list of traditions to protect. The following year, Sabra opened a small workshop, where she now trains nine young women from the village. In 2024, one of her figurines was chosen for an exhibition in a gallery in Marseille.

Idea: none of the three dates is printed in the text. List every time marker, turn each one into a year, then match — and expect one event to be left over.

1. 1999 — born in 1979, "At twenty, she married and moved to Tunis": 1979 + 20 = 1999. Answer: 1 → b.

2. 2012 — she moved in 1999 and worked in the factory "for eleven years", so she went back to Sejnane in 2010; "Two years after her return, she sold her first figurines": 2010 + 2 = 2012. Answer: 2 → c.

3. 2019 — "In 2018 … The following year, Sabra opened a small workshop": 2018 + 1 = 2019. Answer: 3 → a.

The extra event is d: it happened in 2018, a date that is not in Column A. It is the trap, because it sits in the same sentence group as the right answer for 2019.

1. Every Friday evening, a group of about thirty people meets in front of the bus depot in Ben Arous for a brisk walk through the town. Their guide is Walid Hamdi, 46, a bus driver who, three years ago, could not climb the stairs of his own building without stopping twice.

2. For fifteen years, Walid spent up to ten hours a day behind the wheel. He ate sandwiches between routes, drank sweet sodas to stay awake and slept badly. He weighed 128 kilos and thought it was simply "the price of the job".

3. Then, during a routine check-up, the company doctor told him that his blood sugar was dangerously high. "She did not scold me," Walid remembers. "She just showed me the numbers and asked who would drive my children to their weddings." That evening, he poured every bottle of soda down the sink.

4. The changes came slowly. He started by walking home from the depot, then replaced the sandwiches with meals his wife packed for him. After a year, he had lost thirty-one kilos. His colleagues asked him how he had done it, and the Friday walks were born.

…… Receiving a warning about his health.

Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: the text opens with the present (paragraph 1) and then goes back in time, so the order of the paragraphs is not the order of events. Rebuild the order from the time markers: For fifteen years (the background), Then, during a routine check-up (the turning point), The changes came slowly … After a year (the change), the Friday walks were born (the result, which paragraph 1 describes).

1 — Leading an unhealthy life behind the wheel: "For fifteen years, Walid spent up to ten hours a day behind the wheel" (paragraph 2).

2 — Receiving a warning about his health: "the company doctor told him that his blood sugar was dangerously high" (paragraph 3).

3 — Changing his habits little by little: "He started by walking home from the depot, then replaced the sandwiches…" (paragraph 4).

4 — Encouraging others to follow his example: "His colleagues asked him how he had done it, and the Friday walks were born" (paragraph 4), which is the scene of paragraph 1.

In the order printed in the question, the answer is 4 – 1 – 3 – 2. Numbering the phases by the paragraph where they first appear (1 for the Friday walks) is the classic mistake.

1. Every evening at seven, when the central market of Nabeul closes, the volunteers of a local association walk between the stalls with large plastic crates. They collect the fruit and vegetables that the traders cannot sell the next day, so that the food does not end up in the bins.

2. The food is sorted in a borrowed garage. The best produce is taken the same night to two soup kitchens in the town, in order to feed about 150 people who live alone or on the street. Damaged fruit is turned into jam by a group of retired women, who sell the jars at the Saturday market to pay for the association's fuel.

3. What cannot be eaten is not wasted either. It goes to a farm outside the town, where it is mixed into compost to make the soil of the olive groves richer. The traders, who were suspicious at first, now keep their unsold crates aside for the volunteers.

Complete each statement in Column A with the appropriate purpose in Column B. (There is an extra purpose in B.) (3 marks)

A: ActionsB: Purposes
1. Volunteers collect unsold fruit and vegetables at closing time …a. … to pay for the association's fuel.
2. The best produce is taken to soup kitchens …b. … to stop food from being thrown away.
3. Retired women sell jars of jam …c. … to attract new customers to the market.
d. … to feed people who live alone or on the street.
Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: a purpose in the text is introduced by so that, in order to or to + verb. Find the sentence of each action, then read what follows the purpose connector; that clause is the purpose to match. One purpose is left over.

1 → b — "They collect the fruit and vegetables … so that the food does not end up in the bins" (paragraph 1): to stop food from being thrown away.

2 → d — "The best produce is taken the same night to two soup kitchens … in order to feed about 150 people who live alone or on the street" (paragraph 2).

3 → a — "who sell the jars at the Saturday market to pay for the association's fuel" (paragraph 2).

c is the extra purpose: the text never says that the scheme attracts customers; it only says that the traders changed their attitude. The compost (paragraph 3) has its own purpose — to make the soil richer — which is not in Column B, so it matches nothing.

Reading comprehension. Read the text, then answer the question.

1. In the old district of Gabès, more than a third of the residents are over seventy, and many of them live alone since their children moved to the capital or abroad. Last winter, a retired tailor lay on his kitchen floor for two days after a fall before a neighbour noticed that his shutters had stayed closed.

2. The accident shocked Amel Zribi, the young pharmacist of the district. She drew up a list of eighty elderly customers and asked volunteers to call each of them every morning at nine. If nobody answers twice, a volunteer knocks at the door.

3. The scheme has already paid off. In its first six months, the volunteers found two residents who needed urgent care, and both recovered. Just as important, says Amel, is the chat: "For some of them, it is the only voice they hear all day."

Practice text written in the style of the adapted press articles of the bac papers.

Complete the flow chart below with information from paragraphs 1 and 3. (2 marks)

Many elderly residents live alone → a. …………………… → The pharmacist organises a daily phone call to each of them → b. ……………………

Voir la correction commentéeAprès avoir posé votre démarche

Idea: a flow chart is a chain: each box is caused by the one before it. Here the chain is problem → what went wrong → solution → result. The given boxes fix the two ends of each gap, and the instruction names the paragraph of each missing box: a comes from paragraph 1, b from paragraph 3.

a. Between live alone and the pharmacist organises calls, the box must say what went wrong. Paragraph 1: "a retired tailor lay on his kitchen floor for two days after a fall before a neighbour noticed". Answer: an elderly man who fell lay on the floor for two days before anyone noticed (a shorter span of the sentence is enough). Wrong: "their children moved to the capital or abroad" — that explains why they live alone, so it belongs before the first box.

b. After the calls, the box needs the result. Paragraph 3: "the volunteers found two residents who needed urgent care, and both recovered". Answer: two residents who needed urgent care were found in time and recovered. Also relevant: for some of them, it is the only voice they hear all day (less loneliness). Wrong: "If nobody answers twice, a volunteer knocks at the door" — that is part of the solution (paragraph 2), not its result.

1. Until three years ago, the Belhaj family of El Menzah owned two cars and used them for everything, even to buy bread two streets away. Mohamed, the father, drove to his office every morning; the drive took about fifty minutes each way, and the family's fuel bill was around 450 dinars a month.

2. Then their second car was stolen, and they decided not to replace it. "We gave ourselves six months to see if we could manage," says Leila, the mother. They bought three bicycles, and Mohamed started taking the metro to work.

3. These days, the remaining car stays in the garage from Monday to Friday. Mohamed's journey takes forty minutes, door to door, and he reads on the metro. The fuel bill has fallen to about 120 dinars a month, and the children cycle to their sports club on their own.

Idea: the columns are time frames, and the text marks them with relative expressions: Until three years ago = Before, These days = Now. Then marks the turning point between them, and the six months of paragraph 2 are a trial period: they fill neither column. Fill each cell with one fact of the right time frame, in the same shape as the given cell next to it.

a. Now: they had two cars, one was stolen and "they decided not to replace it"; paragraph 3 speaks of "the remaining car". Answer: one (2 − 1 = 1). Writing two copies the Before column.

b. Before: "the drive took about fifty minutes each way". Answer: about fifty minutes by car. forty minutes is wrong: it is the Now value.

c. Now: "The fuel bill has fallen to about 120 dinars a month". Answer: about 120 dinars. The saving (450 − 120 = 330 dinars) is not what the heading asks for.
